The Wedding Industry: Big Business or Big Pressure?

schwartzadrienne

Weddings have become a $70B industry, with the average 2024 wedding costing $33K—up from $29K in 2023. Critics argue the “wedding industrial complex” pressures couples into extravagant celebrations, while supporters say it fuels jobs and small businesses.

Where Did It All Start?

Before Queen Victoria’s 1840 wedding popularized the white dress, weddings were simpler, private affairs. Over time, businesses latched onto traditions—some newly invented, like the diamond engagement ring (thanks, De Beers)—to create a booming industry.

The “Wedding Tax”

Ever noticed wedding prices seem inflated? That’s the so-called "wedding tax"—florists, caterers, and other vendors often charge more for weddings due to increased planning time and expectations. Some say it’s price-gouging; vendors say it’s justified for the additional detail and cost that goes into the work. Consider having a friend do your flowers or self printing invitations.

The Inflation Factor

Beyond industry markups, inflation has driven up wedding costs, with catering, florals, and photography up over 20% since 2020. But wedding price hikes still outpace inflation—costs jumped nearly 14% between 2023 and 2024, while overall inflation was just 2.9%.

Is it all worth it? That’s up to couples to decide.

We at The Laundry Event Hall have made it our mission to not make a wedding something that stresses the wallet or the engaged couple. Our weddings average $8K- $20K all inclusive.
